Ajax unbeatable in Amsterdam

By: Jan | November 5th, 2008

Ajax is this season sheer unbeatable in Amsterdam. No rival, not in the competition, UEFA cup or national cup, has found the net yet.

Heerenveen-player Danijel Pranjic was the last opponent to score in the Arena. That was in the play offs last season, some six months ago.

And that’s quite a feat, taking into account that the Ajax defense never played in the same line up. Stekelenburg missed six games this season and right back Bruno Silva lost his spot due to loss of form.
New signing Oleguer had his injuries and the youthful Van der Wiel played a couple of games right back. At the left hand side, Emanuelson had some games, but against Twente the young international played in midfield.

Emanuelson has to smile when confronted with Ajax status at home. “I don’t know why that is. We all seem a tad sharper when we play at home. You do play for the fans. Against Heerenveen and Aston Villa, we were a bit overwhelmed in the beginning and conceded early. I think our defense is pretty tight. I’m happy to be able to focus on the full back position. Jan Vertonghen plays great football on midfield.”

Gregory van der Wiel is delighted with the support of the fans. “Our defense is really good and we play better away too, I think. Our fans are more vocal this season, it seems. It gives us confidence when we can hear them chant.”

The home records go back to the success years in the mid 90s. If Ajax keeps a clean sheet against Sparta next Sunday, the records from 1993-94 and 1995-96 will be repeated.

In Twente game, Urby even played on the lw up front in a kinda 4-3-3 with KJH in middle, Martina on right and Urby on left. I like him alot better attacking than defending, but Vertonghen is also much more effective in the mf than fullback so its hard to say which one should play lb vs. mf.

Hmm when we started the season I was worried about our back four, but the combination V.d.Wiel, Oleguer and Urby at the back seems to be working. Now I´m more worried about our front given the current form of the hunter…..

Ajax has a must win tomoroow v zilnia in the uefa cup. A loss or tie and they are basically done. Looking forward to seeing their frontline get giong once suare and sulejamni are back. For PSV game, they will all be back on nov 16. I think Sulejami will miss tomorrow’s game, but will play with ajax reserves on monday to get him ready for psv.
