All Over
By: Mike | June 2nd, 2008Well the season is good and over. Your faithful blogger has not been faithful and in fact has been missing in action for quite some time. Put your mind at ease now, everything is as it should be once again.
The season’s ending was one of the most exciting in quite some time. It came down right to the end and low and behold PSV pulled it out and walked away with the lovely dinner plate. Coming from outside of the Netherlands I take in my Eredivisie football with a healthy dose of the rest of Europe and England thrown in for good measure.
From this perspective all of the sources of news, rumours and highlights often include transfer speculation. If there is another league in Europe that produces more talent than the Eredivisie I’m not aware of it. Something unusual though is a young Dutch defender being snapped up by a Champions League side. John Heitinga had his move to Spanish side Athletico Madrid all wrapped up before the Eredivisie medals were handed out in Eindhoven.
Often we see the Netherlands producing top notch attacking players see:Van Nistelrooy, Sneijder, Robben, Drenthe, Babel, Kuyt, van der Vaar, Van Persie, Rigters and de Ridder. Admittedly the latter two have had a minimal if any impact at their new clubs but the point is made.
Those pundits who have pointed to the Oranje’s sturdy defence throughout EK2008 qualification may have a point with Heitinga being a crucial cog in the machine. Its good to see a Dutch defender playing at the highest level of club football for a class team in a quality league.

And Heitinga got his move the right way: he went to the club and they did business. No media circus, no agent talking crazy, no prolonged and distracting speculation. Now, when can he come back?

You’re a little bitter about our friend Huntelaar aren’t you? I agree that Heitinga was classy about how he we about it though.
