Dutch Eredivisie like the financial markets…
By: Jan | October 19th, 2008
Gold goes down, inflation soars, US$ goes up… All that illogical stuff is happening in the fiancial markets and now it seems the Dutch Eredivisie clubs are following that erratic behaviour…
We have a top 3 from Groningen, Breda and Nijmegen if I’m not mistaken.
We have “no-name” coaches like Ron Jans, Mario Been and Robert Maaskant taking the big boys to the cleaners. Tough Dog Stevens needs to get tougher. Gertjan Verbeek feels ashamed but couldn’t admit it and Marco van Basten speaks of insane football…
What is wrong?
Not much really. It’s called hyperinflation and devaluation. The big bully of the “World Economy” (The Top Three) are being attacked by emerging markets (Twente, NAC, NEC, FC Groningen).
It’s exciting!
The smaller clubs smell blood! This year, Feyenoord doesn’t seem to be able to get it together. Against Willem 2 (didn’t they beat Ajax too?), the workman’s club plodded and sleepwalked over the pitch. They should get half their weekly pay this time around. In the second half they started to play football and they did see two balls on the woodwork and one goal disallowed, but hey… What do you expect when you play De Guzman and Biseswar up front and you leave Michael Mols fit and ready on the bench?
PSV can’t dominate the game anymore. I don’t know who or what they’re missing this season (Gomes??? Farfan???), but the once mighty - but boring - PSV is in trouble when the opponent (Maaskant’s NAC this time) puts the pressure on them…
Ajax didn’t do too shabby against FC Groningen, who came to the Arena as the leader of the competition. One fan took a big sign to the stadium: “At last the Eredivisie leader plays in the Arena again…”, but Groningen had too much respect for Ajax and the Van Basten led club won. And Ajax celebrated the win as if they won the Champions League… Geez…
NAC is the new leader, Groningen is up there, McLaren’s Twente looks good and Mario Been’s NEC keeps on winning!!
Even Louis van Gaal’s AZ is making it’s way up the standings…
Interesting times ahead… And although it’s early days still, could this be the season where Twente, Groningen or ADO Den Haag wins the title?
Going to the Arsenal game? Find out how to get to North London and where to stay near Emirates Stadium.

Jan, do you think Luis Suarez has what it takes to go to CL club next year if Ajax not make it themselves and he wants out? I heard Liverpool had some interest. But I think he is more a freelance striker than a right winger.

I do think he could be sensational, but I also believe he has to up his game a bit. Maybe this season could be his breakthrough season… Van Basten, Jans, Koster…all the coaches he worked with love him. So…who knows, another Carlos Tevez maybe?

It seems parity has infected the Eredivisie.
That is what the NFL is built on, any given Sunday any team can beat any other. It makes (in my opinion) a better league. Critics claim it breeds mediocrity.Posted from

Yeah, I think it’s cool. If the sub top is getting better, that is. If it’s more that the top clubs are getting weaker, than it’s a bad thing.
