Feyenoord has confidence in their youth
By: Jan | November 15th, 2008
Leroy Fer, Diego Biseswar and Luigi Bruins aren’t available against FC Twente. This means that Feyenoord could well start in Enschede with three A-junior players in the line-up. Forced, because normally no coach would throw his talents off the deep end like this. “But these lads are doing so well, and that’s a huge compliment for the youth development and the scouting!” Verbeek said.
Luis Pedro made his debut last Thursday as replacement for Bruins. The A-junior did so by scoring two goals and playing really well. His first Eredivisie game is waiting. “Our team will be different against Twente than last week’s against Utrecht. If I have to play more A-juniors, so be it.” Verbeek added.
Verbeek doesn’t have much choice and can’t change the situation. Although he does want to protect his youngsters as much as possible. Pedro is able to do this, he thinks. “I wish I had the chance in the past at that age to play two games for Feyenoord in only four days.”
“I think McClaren won’t change much,” he looked forward to the game. The former England team manager has a good solid team, with a lot of ingrained players. “Their midfield has changed a bit, but their defense and offense is really stable. And Elia is the danger man, at the moment.”
However, the issues for Twente are up front. The Tukkers only scored 12 times in ten games. “Hey, as the coach of their next opponent, I won’t comment on that. I have to be careful. If I say they don’t score a lot, I am inviting them to change that pattern against us. So I’ll wisely refrain from commenting…”
Presumed line-up Feyenoord: Timmer; Tiendalli, Bahia, Hofland, De Cler; Pedro, El Ahmadi, Wijnaldum, Van Bronckhorst; Makaay and Janota.

Jan, what is up with that helicopter landing on the pitch in the photo accompanying this article. Is that a tradition oat feyenoord? Interesting. Also, love your columns, jan!

Thank you Donn, good to have you mate.
And yes, at the start of the season, the new signings are brought into De Kuip by chopper. Always exciting!
Once, they used those parachute guys, to come down with chutes in the Feyenoord colors and have them land on the pitch. Someone even suggested the new signings to do a duo-jump with some pro. The insurance company balked at the idea.
Anyway, I was in the stadium at the time and when we saw the guy coming down with the chute, we could all tell at some point that he was actually going to miss the bloody stadium!! We saw him sail past the stands and he must have landed on the carpark. Hilarious… Some time later, he came running into the stadium and onto the pitch, with his chute trailing behind him, hahahahaa…

Yeah man, that was fun… It’s actually better than the “Real Thing”. This is like a ball on the crossbar vs in the net. Sometimes the crossbar balls are more exciting and basically more rare than goals, right?

Neither am I. It’s a glitch in the system.
Don’t you think teams should be awarded a point for a ball on the bar? It’s harder to hit the bar than the goal-net!
