Peter Bosz doesn’t commit his future to Gertjan Verbeek

By: Jan | October 9th, 2008

Feyenoord sponsor Fortis has the image of a loser. Brand expert Paul Moers said so. He advised Feyenoord to dump this sponsor as fast as possible, since “I wouldn’t want to be seen in that jersey”.

Well, that’s something. You don’t have a cent to spend, you have one of the worst starts in the Eredivisie in history and a main sponsor who only plays panic football. The Dutch Finance Secretary wants us all to believe differently, but Fortis is bankrupt. And that secretary is a Feyenoord fan! He even wanted to change the Fortis logo to “Owned by the State” on Feyenoord’s jersey. How ’bout that?

The world is in meltdown and the Dutch Finance Secretary is doing a comedy stand up. That doesn’t bode well for our confidende. And that’s what it’s all about. Confidence. But what is it exactly?

It arrives on foot and leaves on a horse, is what people say. In other words, it takes years to gain it and can be lost in days. People on Wall Street understand this saying. Feyenoord played an ok first half against NEC, but one slip of De Cler and it was gone. Wham bam thank you mam, gone is your confidence. And some days before, Feyenoord got a full tank of confidence against Kalmar in the UEFA Cup.

You can also see it the other way around. AZ wasn’t able to hit a bitterbal and suddenly they give free masterclasses.

Working with people you know and trust always helps. Jan Reker uses his old boys network at PSV and we all know what good mates Marco van Basten and John Van ‘t Schip are.

Those intimate contacts are also present at Feyenoord. Peter Bosz is the protege of Wim Jansen (assistant coach). Stanley Brard - director of youth development - is married to Wim Jansen’s wife. The wife of general manager Woerts is very close with team manager Van Noortwijk’s wife and strikers coach John Lammers is best buddies with technical director Peter Bosz.

It makes you wonder how strong Verbeek’s position is, within this old friends network? It was telling, that during an interview with Studio Voetbal, Peter Bosz refused to link his future to Verbeek’s. That gives us lots of confidence…

But, Feyenoord has other issues. The shirt sponsor. According to Moers, it would be wise to get ABN Amro on the jerseys. What? A Feyenoord shirt with ABN Amro? Let’s go with Wouter Bos’ suggestion and just put “State Treasury” on the jerseys, please…
